For Tommy Jarvis, life has never been simple - quite the opposite, in fact. It is, however, about to become decidedly more difficult. Moments after stumbling through a doorway to another world, Tommy and his friends discover they are the key to ending a war in which the casualties are too great to count and their chances of survival are almost nonexistent.

Why would someone review a book (and give it four stars) that they haven't even read? Easy, the author is hilarious. He's the kind of guy whose facebook (and myspace for those of you old enough to remember that relic) is loaded with people who are dying to know the next bit of craziness he comes up with. He's got an online presence inversely proportional to his love of large crowds and hospitals. His verbal sparring will not only entertain, it's proven to alter your existance. I mean, c'mon, how many of you haven't fully lived because you don't know the feeling of ruining a keyboard from laughing so hard your coffee sprayed out your nose.

So if the dude's this good, why haven't I read his book? Easy, my car decided it wanted all my spare funds for awhile. Pissed me off. One more failure and that pile of scrap is getting a sledgehammer makeover. Fortunately it's scared into submission and I FINALLY got to order the book. It arrives today.

Why not wait on reviewing the book until I read it if it's so close to being here? Because Novak just had to put up a contest and only those who review are eligible to enter to win the second book which is so close to being released. I want to enter because if I don't my car will go crazy again when the second book comes out. If I read the first I'll want to read the second, and if I don't enter my dang car will die again, delaying my reading of the second. Logic, yeah.

So those of you in the know will still be scratching your head wondering why I'm posting if the contest is technically over? Karma, hopefully good intentions count in the evil mind of my car and the benevolence of the author.

FORTS Fathers Sons Steven Novak 9780981843155 Books Reviews

Steve Novak is an amazing storyteller and this book more than proves that! Finally something different in an adventure story. I'm looking forward to the next two! I thought that it was kind of cool that each chapter has its own little illustration.

I definitely recommend this book!
*4.5 stars*

I wan't sure of this one before reading, because it is not my normal read. I am very glad I took it on now. FORTS Fathers and Sons is about a group of kids finding themselves in the middle of a war of a different world (or worlds). This story has magical powers, prophesies, new breeds of creatures, and all the other things I expect to find in a fantasy. But there was something much more hidden between the covers of FORTS Fathers and Sons.

Mixed in with this epic fantasy we find characters with realistic problems. It was more more emotional than I expected. I wasn't expecting the story to touch on things like domestic abuse, but is does, and it does a wonderful job at it. Each character, even the non-human ones, had their own past and background story that they brought to the table. I really enjoyed getting to know each one of them.

The universe that Novak has created is so large. There are so many places, and so many creatures to discover. I was reminded of Star Wars for this reason. In Star Wars, there is potential for anything to happen. There are surreal surprises around every corner, but that is just the norm for the Star Wars universe. The FORTS universe works the same way. There is no way you could cover it all in one book. There is so much room for this story to go, and that makes me excited to continue on in this series.

Novak is a great writer that can keep his readers engaged. My only complaint would be the minor errors with the grammar. The story could use the keen eye of a good editor. But it wasn't enough to distract me from the story.

I really enjoyed the ending. It has me eager for the sequel, Liars and Thieves. FORTS is an abnormal world with a human heart. It's the type of book you can get lost in. Novak has come in and proved that sometimes, nothing beats a good old fashioned epic fantasy.
Steven Novak has managed to combine a wonderful fantasy/adventure setting with some difficult familial issues, such as what happens when grief overwhelms a family and tears the survivors apart. A very good read, cannot wait for the remaining books.
You should buy this book for your kid, and then read it yourself.

The story, creatures and settings in this book create a rich new world (99 new worlds, actually) that we only begin to explore in the first of what I hope to be many books in this series. Perhaps though, it's the window back into childhood that makes the story so dear to me. It's not just an amazing adventure, although that would have been enough. It's also a touching reminder of what it is to be human (perhaps 'sentient' would be more accurate...). I loved it.
I found "Forts Fathers and Sons" to be a delightful story. The reader becomes immediately involved in the lives of the main characters before they are thrust upon a journey which forever changes their lives. Like Alice and her adventures through the looking glass, the children are caught up in the machinations of war and conquest as they try to find their way home. Alien creatures, prophesies, strange powers and magic promises a thrilling ride. A must read!
But I don't want to have to face the Ochan army.

The fantasy world created by Steven Novak is alive, not only with malice and force, but also with human dignity and courage in the face of insurmountable odds. That's a pretty heady concoction, if you ask me. I mean, who doesn't love a good underdog story? And as underdogs go, the protagonists of the story are as good as they get Kids in their early teens who have nearly had the nobility beaten out of them by their harsh circumstances.

Novak does not paint his characters too thick, and that's a great thing. Even some of the villains are sympathetic, and your heart breaks for the situations. If a book can give you all that -- a reason to believe in human nobility and hope, and all for less than $20 -- come on, it seems like a no-brainer to me. I'm sure there are blocks of time you've spent in a movie theater, watching a sub-par movie and wishing you had your $20 back.

Don't subject yourself to that regret again. Meet some new heroes and get to know some new friends.

Oh, and keep your eyes peeled for the sequels.
