Greg's on a downward spiral. He broke his back a few years into a promising stunt career, then his master died shortly after they began living a BDSM lifestyle together. He's just lost. So lost, that he can't keep a Master for more than two weeks. So lost that he's been arrested several times and is this close to winding up in jail. So lost that Master Oliver doesn't know what to do with him anymore.
In desperation, Oliver calls on his friend Appleton who lives in isolation in Northern Canada. Ap enjoys working with subs, and has both the time and the inclination to work with a lost soul like Greg. Not to mention, there's no way to get into legal trouble or run away from Ap's house given its location. So, Ap takes Greg in, hoping to help Greg find his center and himself again.
Will Greg find what he needs with Ap? Or will he find so much more?

PROS:
- I love hurt/comfort stories, and usually the emotional hurt is caused by one character having been abused, neglected, broken, etc. by someone in his past. I found it refreshing to read a hurt/comfort story in which the emotional pain was caused by death rather than abuse. Death causes a whole different set of emotional issues to deal with.
- Stories always interest me more when the characters have imperfections--and not just emotional ones. I love reading about people who are not beautiful, or struggle with their weight, or are physically handicapped in some way. Greg had a serious accident several years before the story's start, and Ap has to take that injury into account every time they play in order to avoid injuring Greg further.
- One of the ways in which Ap demonstrates his Dominance over Greg is unusual, and I found it delightful to read about both characters' reactions to the behavior: Ap's feeling of ownership and Greg's simultaneous fear and surrender.
- There is a pair of characters, Oliver and Jack, who appear in many of the Hammer books but who don't have any stories of their own (as far as I know). I've always liked them okay, but Michael has included more detail on them in a few recent Hammer stories. They are growing on me in a big way.
CONS:
- When Ap first hears of Greg, the report is far from complimentary: Greg has been in jail multiple times, he's been picked up for fighting and for drunk and disorderly conduct, he's been incredibly difficult for the men who have attempted to Dominate him, etc. I was expecting quite an emotional fight between Ap and Greg as a result of all of this, but Greg has only 2 breakdowns throughout the course of the story, and neither one felt particularly monumental to me. I suppose the journey they experience simply felt a little too easy.
- (I wasn't bothered by this, but I know this sort of scenario bores some readers and/or makes them feel a bit claustrophobic.) The men are physically isolated from the outside world, and as a result, the majority of the scenes take place in their house with no other characters present.
- Once the characters start having sex, they do little else. Well, I suppose that's not quite true: they usually start by doing something else, but they wind up in the bedroom (or the dungeon) at the end of just about every scene.
Overall comments: I'm addicted to this series, mostly because Sean Michael's D/s characters basically fall into two character categories that I like: the emotionally unstable, flighty sub and the got-it-together, confident, kind-hearted Dom. The characters here are nothing out of the ordinary, nor is the story. But I still found it a heart-warming read.

Solitary A Hammer Novel The Hammer Club Book 22 edition by Sean Michael Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Solitary A Hammer Novel by Sean Michael is part of the long-running Hammer BDSM series; it's a sweet novel. The main characters Greg and Ap are immediately sympathetic and engaging. Solitary deals with the development of Ap and Greg's relationship as Dom and sub.
Greg comes to Ap with some serious emotional baggage. A fractured and beaten-down spirit leaves him unable to keep a Dom for more than a couple of weeks; Greg is very high maintenance, demanding a great deal of attention. Ap, on the other hand, is a self-sufficient individual comfortable with his solitary existence out in the middle of the wilds of Northern Canada.
Michael brings these two disparate characters together with warmth and depth. Greg's fragility is clear, but so is Ap's strength. Both characters are well-dawn with distinct features and flaws. Michael focuses more on control aspect of the BDSM life-style in revealing Ap and Greg's story.
Oliver and Jack, owners of the Hammer Club, make brief appearances in Solitary to move the story along at strategic points as Greg and Ap get to know each other on Ap's tree farm. Greg learns to deal with the loss of his former Dom, Tim and he develops new strength under Ap peace-giving touch.
The Hammer Club series is a great collection of stories and Solitary is a fine addition. Ap and Greg's story is worth 4 stars for the skill of writing and the passion of the characters.

Solitary by author Sean Michael is a very emotional read. We have a sub Greg who thought he found himself and happiness. Then his master is killed making Greg question everything about himself. He doesn’t want to let go of his master even in death. Ap is a very down to Earth man. He leads a very simple life, he likes it like that. When Greg needs a master to take him in Ap has no problems being that man. The more Ap gets to know Greg the more he wants to do more than just help him get through his grief, he wants to keep Greg for himself. But first before he can do that, he has to convince Greg to live again, to stop the self torture and allow Ap to bring him peace.
Ap is kind, sweet, and so patient exactly what the out of control, Greg needs. Greg thinks he needs to punish himself every time he is happy, so he doesn’t forget his old master. Ap teaches him only his dom can make those choices, and Ap is the dom. Watching Greg go from pain, suffering, and heartache to love, understand, and strength was an emotional, journey for me. I really love the heart and soul in this book. The BDSM brings all of that to the for front giving the story another layer to sink into.
You do not have to read these books in order to get this story. However I would only because they are just that good. If you do not like extreme scenes this story will make you slightly uncomfortable. But for me it just brought another dynamic to the story and made it just that much more real. This is a really memorable story with characters I will not soon forget.
Five Shooting Stars!! and Recommended Read
I love these books and the author and this one was touching as well as sexy. I will never pass over a hammer novel,
Oh I loves this one so much! Appleton was my favorite by far, so strong, so patient,so solid and calm he was the epitome of focus. Once again Sean you have blown me out of the water!!!
A great story of finding your place. That sometimes life doesn't go your way but it can always get better. With a side of crops and lube.
